Lyme Disease - Overview
Lyme disease is caused by bacteria that is most commonly transmitted by the bite from a deer tick.
Lyme Disease - Testing
Lab tests to identify the antibodies to the bacteria can help confirm if someone has Lyme disease. Some common tests for Lyme disease include an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test or a western blot test.
Lyme Disease - Testing Labs
Lyme disease testing can be performed at most local health care centers or clinics that do blood work.
Lyme Disease - Testing results
Both the ELISA test and western blot test are usually used to confirm a Lyme disease diagnosis. The ELISA test might not come back positive during the early stages of Lyme disease, but usually the presence of a rash is enough to confirm the presence of the disease in those who live in tick-infested areas. If the ELISA test is positive, the western blot test is usually used to confirm the diagnosis. The western blot test detects antibodies for several proteins to confirm diagnosis.
